Discuss this workshop

Come with us to celebrate the 18th year of the traditional Annual Nikonians Photography Adventure Trip (ANPAT) this spring, the Nikonians event of the year, this time in the the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. It will be a full week of photography, shop talk and camaraderie.

WHERE:

In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

It has been said that spring is arguably the best time of the year to visit the many beautiful waterfalls in the park. Temperatures are usually mild, insects are still at a minimum, the trails are often lined with beautiful wildflowers and the typical spring rains make for a heavier flow of water at the various falls.

We planned to start in Townsend with Cades Cove, Tremont, Roaring Fork, Greenbrier, and Clingman’s Dome.

Then we’ll head to Sylva for the southern and eastern spots – Blue Ridge Parkway, Cataloochee Valley, Deep Creek, and Oconoluftee.

And we will include a day trip to the Biltmore house in Asheville that combines with sunrise and sunset on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The areas we will be touring are blessed with an abundance of inspiring natural landscapes and wildlife. But what makes the area special are the streams and wildflowers.

Cades Cove is known for deer, wild turkeys, black bears, and other wildlife. Deer will make a great subject. Wild turkey will be in breeding plumage. Black bears will be a bit skinny and scraggly after the winter, but when we see bears or bear cubs we’ll look for photo opportunities.

Cataloochee Valley is known for historic buildings and elk, and we’ll be close to the start of elf calving. The landscape opportunities alone would make the trip worthwhile.

The Smokies are known for great landscapes; there are few cliché images but you can expect to create original images of streams fog in valleys, and mountain layers.

Along the way, there will be plenty of creative opportunities for macro, infrared, and other specialties. Spring in the Smokies is known for wonderful diversity of wildflowers from trillium to lady’s slippers and lots more. Because of the elevation range, we’ll be able to move higher to extend the bloom season.
