Discuss this workshop

Join one of North America's most successful wildlife photographers as he leads you to the amazing wildlife and scenics of Grand Teton National Park.

Join Nikonians Academy Instructor Jim Stamates for 4 wild days to learn, shoot, and experience Grand Teton National Park.

Trip Dates: 10/5/10 - 10/8/10

The stunning autumn landscape of Grand Teton NP will have turned to brilliant golds, rusts and browns, wetting our appetite for great Western scenics. We arrive before dawn on our first morning at Schwabacher Landing and we wait for the sun to kiss the tops of the Grand Tetons. The reflection in the beaver pond adds the perfect touch to our first images of the day.

Then we drive onward to Mormon Row to get the classic shot of the barns with the snowcapped peaks and fall color backdrop. We head to Oxbow Bend, but not for scenics, instead we look for river otters, moose, bald eagles, and osprey. Elk, bears, pronghorn, and bison fill the memory cards and this is only the first day!

All four days of the workshop are packed as full as the first day. Jim will guide you to the best locations for wildlife photography while he also instructs you in professional field photography techniques.

You will shoot:

Bull moose in a backdrop of fall colors are the bill-of-faire at Grand Teton NP and we spend as much time as it takes to get special images of this magnificent animal. Other wildlife may include, Bison, Elk, Pronghorn, Black and Grizzly Bears, Coyote, Fox, River Otters, Beavers, and Wolves. We will also look for Bald Eagles, Great Gray Owls, Trumpeter Swans, and Osprey.

Landscapes will include the Snake River, Autumn Colors with the Grand Tetons, Oxbow Bend, Schwabacher Landing, Mormon Barn, and Jackson and Jenny Lakes.

You will experience:

The Grand Tetons in the fall (the best time to be there), being near wild animals, the feeling of wilderness, great camaraderie, exceptional photo opportunities, and a lot of fun. All of this with no strenuous hiking.

  • You will learn

    • True wildlife photography always includes great landscapes. We will concentrate on your vision to maximize your chance of making stunning images. You will learn camera settings for active wildlife and quiet landscapes, how to expose for great scenics in difficult light, how to make HDR captures, and where all the best locations are in the Tetons.
    • But that’s not all, the Tetons provide abundant wildlife opportunities. You will learn how to get into the rhythm of your subject so it accepts your presence and allows you ample time to make your perfect shot. We will discuss field ethics and etiquette, when it is okay to use fill flash and when it’s not, and how low-impact techniques will improve your wildlife and nature photographs.
